Domestic Abuse Defense In Southwest Pennsylvania

Requests for protection from abuse (PFA) orders, also known as temporary restraining orders, may be filed by spouses, ex-spouses, domestic partners as well as same-sex couples. When an individual files for a PFA, the judge will review the victim’s petition and may issue a temporary PFA order protecting the alleged abuse victim and his or her children until the date of the final hearing. At the final hearing, both parties may present their sides of the story. Once testimony has been heard, the judge may issue a permanent PFA order that is effective for up to three years.

In addition to ordering the abuser to leave the family home and stop harassing the victim, as well as many other types of relief, the PFA may give the victim sole physical and legal custody of the children, especially in severe cases. If the alleged abuser violates the order, he or she may be arrested and put in jail.

Domestic abuse convictions and PFA order violations have harsh consequences. You can lose custody of your children, go to jail and lose your right to own firearms.
